An incredible plethora of updates from Citrix after the release of XenApp 6

April 19, 2010

The latest release of XenApp is long overdue, to finally have the best virtualization platform for applications also on 2008 R2. As a result of this release there was a large number of updates on related products. Let’s we see some of them, just to summarize…

On March 24th there was the release of XenApp6 (that exclusively runs on 2008R2) and of the Feature Pack 3 for XenApp5 (2003 and 2008) in order to add some functionality to the previous version. For more information you can see my previous post. Accordingly, also the new clients has been released, the Citrix Online Plug-in 12.0 (alias ICA Client) and the Offline Plug-in 6.0 (the Streaming Client). About the Online plug-in, it fixes 17 bugs and is available as a single zip archive containing the full version and the web one, as well as the metadata required to load the client on Merchandising Server.

The same day Citrix also released XenDesktop 4 Feature Pack 1; considering that Platinum Edition includes the XenApp component, this FP essentially incorporate the latest features from XenApp6.
Also, at the end of March, Citrix has released a major update for XenApp 4.5 and 5 for Microsoft Windows Server 2003. The Hotfix Rollup Pack 6 includes fixes issued in the last nearly 50 months and includes all fixes already present in previous HRP. This HRP is available only for Windows Server 2003, both 32 bits and 64 bits.

In the first weekend of April Apple launched its iPad in the U.S. market, so Citrix (that see at Apple iPad as an ideal device for desktop virtualization) released on April 8th a specific ICA client for this platform. The Citrix Receiver for iPad is available for free via the AppStore, but Citrix has also updated the receiver for iPhone that now reaches version 2.2.1.
In those days Citrix also released the Citrix Receiver for Android (version 1.0), that it joins the release of Receiver 11.5 for Windows Mobile, available from 19th March.

All these components may seem just a marketing operation (and perhaps the feature pack 1 for XenDesktop it seems really so, because in practice it only includes the new XenApp6, virtually no news strictly related to VDI), but the issue for such a diverse range of client devices demonstrate the attention of Fort Lauderdale software house either to the customer base already installed (which gives the updates) and at the same time its vision towards the future that will certainly be tied to mobile devices. And between them, at least in the the U.S., Apple plays undoubtedly a significant role.
