XenServer 5.5 vs vSphere 4.0 white paper

August 7, 2009

On the Citrix site appeared an interesting white paper: “Technical and commercial comparison of Citrix XenServer and VMware“. As we can read from this document’s overview, it “provides a technical and commercial comparison of Citrix® XenServer™ and VMware® vSphere™, two of the leading server virtualization products on the market“.
The white paper briefly introduce the differences about various aspects (architecture, installation, storage integration, disaster recovery, virtual machine backup and recovery and DR solutions) of the two virtualization solutions .
Obviously this document emphasizes the Xenserver benefits, such its open architecture, performance, storage integration and total cost of ownership. About this last aspect it shows sample cost comparisons (TCO) of XenServer and a VMware-based solution for the consolidation of physical servers. TCO values for 3 years of IT operations (initial licensing plus maintenance/subscription advantage) differs in a very significant way.
